It’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Is Security On Your Radar?

Since 2003, October has been recognized as National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). This effort was brought to life through a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance. NCSAM was created to ensure that every individual stays safe and secure online.

Some of the themes for Cyber Security in 2017 include:

Simple Steps for Online Safety
Every digital user should know how to be safe and secure while using the Internet. Every individual should be better prepared to identify cyber threats.

Cyber from the Break Room to the Board Room
Data breaches and cybercrime don’t discriminate. Everyone in an organization is susceptible to becoming a victim, therefore it is important to educate employees and promote best practices.

Recognizing and Combating Cyber Crime
Cyber crime is a growing concern that has the potential to affect everyone. Every organization should understand the different types of cyber threats that could affect their business.

Our connected lives, what’s your APP-titude?
Technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that individuals are always connected. While there are tremendous benefits of this technology, it is critical to understand how to use these cutting-edge innovations in safe and secure ways.

Is your business protected? Who is in charge of making sure it is:
Small and mid-sized businesses make up the majority of companies in this country and employ about 90% of the workforce, and many have valuable intellectual property and personal information related to their customers. Many SMBs think they don’t have to worry, but cyber threats can affect businesses of all sizes.

Every organization, including SMBs, should put at least one person within the business in charge of cyber security.

This individual should be responsible for some of the following items:

- Learning about threats, trends and security options.
- Planning, acquiring and implementing security safeguards.
- Educating other personnel on cyber security best practices and policies.
- Maintaining and updating the security safeguards utilized by your business.
