Rethinking IT to Create New Business Opportunities

It’s 2018, and with a new year, a new chapter begins. If you’re rethinking your IT department and its role in opening up new opportunities for your business, I’ve come across a thought provoking piece from Deloitte’s, The Symphonic Enterprise that I think you will enjoy.

The Power of Innovation to Disrupt the Marketplace
Today’s marketplace is changing so fast that businesses need to find new ways to be competitive, and to survive and thrive. One of the keys to successful innovation is to come up with new ideas to keep operations, products and services fresh. If you go one step further and use innovation to disrupt the market and become a game-changer of your industry, you can drive even greater value for your customers.

Innovation and emerging technologies, including the mobile Internet, autonomous vehicles, and advanced genomics, are in the process of reshaping the world we live in. However, not every emerging technology will alter the business or social landscape. Only some truly have the potential to disrupt the status quo, and have a great economic impact, business models, and people.

With business strategies linked inseparably to technology , this piece by Deloitte is a great read.

This article proposes to rethink IT delivery models and how to go about transforming them into engines for driving business growth. It also addresses modernizing infrastructure and the architecture stack with a two-pronged re-engineering approach leading the way to defining the tech organization of the future with the tools, velocity, and empowerment it needs to deliver greater value.

Adapting incrementally to market shifts and disruptive innovation with IT’s traditional siloed ways of working no longer supports the rapid-fire change that drives business today. There are many opportunities for technology to have a greater impact on the business however, challenges and risks need to be addressed.

For many years, IT has helped re-engineer the business, yet few IT departments have re-engineered themselves with the same vision, discipline, and rigor. The authors at Deloitte see the next 18 to 24 months as a period of change where CIOs will begin re-engineering their own IT department and their approaches to technology. Their efforts will have the goal of transforming their technology ecosystems from groupings of working parts into high-performance engines to deliver speed, impact and value.

The expectation to see automation (driven by machine learning) will also likely be prominent to accelerate various processes in addition to running the IT stack. The opportunity for CIOs and their teams to transform how they budget, organize, staff, and deliver services is slowly becoming a reality.

Happy New Year!
