Is Pandemic Readiness the New DR plan for IT?

IT organizations have been working hard for the last 20 years developing and updating their disaster recovery plans.

An effective DR plan included strategy for remote working, oftentimes presumed to be caused by a local geographical constrained issue around an office or area. The COVID-19 pandemic has global impact and the most readily felt impact on many IT departments pertains to physical distancing.  This includes resources not able to travel to the office, supply chains being disrupted and business processes being changed. IT departments and organizations that are further along the digital transformation journey are likely to be less negatively impacted by COVID-19.

However, digital transformation does not tell the whole story.

Policy surrounding essential businesses and physical distancing play a more complex role in affecting business outcomes. Compelling events have a habit of increasing our focus.  For organizations, now is the time to bring together all lines of business to work together to provide essential services to our customers.  What is IT's responsibility?  Events of 2020 are unprecedented in most of our lifetimes.  Nevertheless, IT's responsibility, as always, is to steer their organization through raging storms and calm seas.  For businesses to survive and prosper, their service delivery needs to be secure and flexible to meet any contingency plans.  Additionally, digital transformation is not just a buzz phrase but a necessary goal to success moving forward beyond 2020.

How prepared was your business' IT department for the COVID-19 pandemic?  How quickly was IT able to react and provide essential services to your business? Are you ready to come out the pandemic with renewed focus and energy towards servicing your customers?  These are some of the important questions to ask ourselves and find answers to.

Thank you and please continue to stay safe and healthy,
