What’s up with storage and software defined storage

By: Chris Charette   Categories:Storage and Data Management, Software Defined Storage

Everybody is talking about software defined storage (SDS)...so what’s all the noise about? I found a couple of articles to be quite helpful to help you understand this solution but also new products that provide this solution to midsize businesses.

VMware, a leader in virtualization, has the following definition for SDS: “make the entire IT infrastructure completely fluid so that all resources – compute, network, and storage – can be quickly and easily allocated or reclaimed to meet dynamic business requirements (including predictable performance), thereby extending the flexibility and cost savings benefits virtualization provides across the entire IT infrastructure.”

And this essentially translates into next generation storage virtualization.

For the full article, check out VMware’s blog about  The Missing Link in Software-Defined Storage.
I also found a great white paper on software defined storage from an IBM perspective that breaks down all the components of this new platform. Simply put, they see the end goal of storage as a service to provide flexibility and responsiveness to business demands.

IBM Software Defined Storage is now built-in to their newer storage devices such as the Storwize V5000 announced earlier this month. This is the newest addition to the Storwize family of disk systems, and a great solution for midsize businesses that need to face the challenges of rapid data growth with limited budgets. As an intermediate offering, Storwize V5000 is designed to help consolidate and provide new capabilities to existing storage infrastructures.
