Why Should You Adopt a Private Cloud Strategy?

Cloud has been around for a long time now and multiple choices abound. Whether your organization is just beginning or extending its cloud journey, you are faced with many decisions, and identifying the best cloud for your needs is the challenge!

Why choose a private cloud?

First of all, why should you even consider this? A private cloud will let your organization be the single tenant with complete control over its dedicated data center. It will not share a data center with other tenants as in a multitenant architecture and will prove to be an excellent choice when managing highly sensitive information with strict security policies. . You will find that successful private cloud implementations not only reduce operational costs, but they also allow organizations to reap the benefits of faster delivery models, improved quality of service and increased agility, elasticity and responsiveness to their business needs.

What are your goals?

When planning your cloud, do it with both your applications and business goals in mind. Your development staff might want increased agility that includes reduced time for provisioning applications. But your business goals might require a flexible infrastructure with the ability to scale to meet elastic demand translating into quicker time to market that will satisfy your business units. Take the required time with your team to specify all your goals to facilitate your choices downstream.

Options for a private cloud deployment

When planning your private cloud, you may have infrastructure that you have invested in and need to repurpose towards this project. You also need to decide how much control you need or want to have, what level of customization you expect and how fast you want this project implemented and deployed.

These requirements will all guide you to the best avenue for picking the right Private Cloud infrastructure option. Here are three main ones to consider:

A custom build

This option is for an organization that desires the maximum amount of control and has very specific requirements. It may be the costliest and most complex of the three but keep in mind that private clouds have matured and become easier to implement. This option will provide you with:

• Custom applications/requirements
• Control to tune everything yourself
• Specific performance requirements that might not be met by a converged infrastructure solution

Reference architecture approach

This option is most suitable when you need to reuse existing infrastructure you have invested in. It will also provide you with peace of mind because the components work for you already and you are essentially following your "recipe". If your organization already has standards and wishes to continue to use those building blocks, this is the option to investigate further.

• Includes components that have been tested to work together
• Different from converged because hardware is not a single SKU from one single manufacturer
• Components are not all from a single vendor

Converged infrastructure

This option is the easiest to deploy and a good choice if you have a remote location. It’s also the least costly if this fits your needs and do not require to use existing infrastructure. This option provides:

• A single product developed by a single vendor that includes storage, server and networking components
• A unit that is tested holistically
• Easier and faster implementation because this solution works out of the box instead of building it yourself in the first two options
• Ease of manageability because converged infrastructures typically have built in management capabilities that span across storage/server/networking, but also from a single vendor

Move to the Cloud!

In closing, moving to a private cloud, whether you build it all in your own datacenter or have it built and hosted for you by a third-party, will offer your organization a dedicated pool of IT resources. A pool that consists of servers, storage and networking that will allow your IT department to deliver infrastructure, platforms and software applications in an easily managed, easily scaled and easily billed service architecture.
