AI has evolved significantly in the last few years with many organizations already strategically integrating it into their business model. With AI being accessible to businesses of all sizes, how can organizations put it into practice?
In theory, the power of AI and machine learning (ML) can make great things possible, but theory is not enough. To learn and realize the full merit of these technologies, they need to be tried and tested in an actual production environment.
A November 2019 survey by Gartner suggests that more organizations are moving towards an adaptable, change-ready culture, which is a positive sign.
What it takes to jump on the AI bandwagon:
1. Identify areas of your business to address or problems to solve.
From MIT Sloan’s research report* Five Management Strategies For Getting The Most From AI (based on a global survey of 3,000 C-level executives): These may not be simply cost-cutting or time-saving measures, but ways to create new products or services, increase productivity or winning more market share.
2. Identify skills and knowledge gaps.
MIT Sloan’s report1 recommends investing in both technical and managerial talent capabilities. In the survey, executives gave several reasons for not adopting AI, including: 30% were uncertain of its business case; 21% cited the scarcity of AI-related human capabilities.
3. Get your data in order.
AI and ML systems need large amounts of accurate and rich data to build accurate models.
4. Assess your technology foundation.
MIT Sloan’s report recommends not only identifying your digital assets (computers, servers, storage, and other information communication and technology assets), but determining how they are used – for example, for digital marketing and back-office operations, as well as who is using them.
5. Run a pilot project – start small.
Select a data-heavy, low-risk environment to conduct your test.
"The current state of AI does not yet live up to its promise. But that doesn’t mean managers should sit on the sidelines and wait until it develops further — they should start incorporating AI into business processes now”. - Sam Ransbotham, Associate Professor of Information Systems, Carroll School of Management, Boston College
