Generative AI vs. Agentic AI: Why the Shift from “Creating” to “Doing” Matters

Generative AI has already earned its place in the modern workplace. Tools that can write, summarize, design, and brainstorm are helping teams move faster and reduce everyday friction. For many organizations, this has been a meaningful first step in AI adoption.

But as AI adoption matures, the conversation is shifting - from what AI can create to what AI can actually get done.

That’s where agentic AI comes in.

What are the differences?

At a high level, the distinction is simple: Generative AI creates. Agentic AI acts. Both deliver value, but they solve very different problems.

Generative AI is highly effective when the goal is content creation or idea generation. It responds to prompts, produces outputs, and stops. It remains firmly in a supportive role - accelerating human work rather than directing it.

Agentic AI goes a step further. Instead of waiting for instructions at each stage, it operates around an objective. Given a defined goal, it can plan next steps, interact with systems, execute tasks across workflows, and adapt as conditions change - often using generative AI as one of multiple tools along the way.

Let's look at a practical example:

You tell your AI assistant: 'My VPN isn't working".

Your generative AI output will include common VPN issues, suggest restarting the device, and perhaps share links to support documentation. The key traits to note are the one-shot, prompt-driven output. There is a lack of awareness of performance, timing, or next steps. Once the content is produced, it stops.

Limitations Include:

  • No ticket ownership
  • No system access
  • No resolution tracking

Agentic AI, on the other hand, goes a notch beyond to continuously work towards a set goal.

In this case, you give it a goal: “Resolve VPN incidents end‑to‑end."

The Agent:

  1. Creates or classifies the ticket
  2. Checks VPN gateway health
  3. Verifies user group policies
  4. Resets client configuration
  5. Tests connectivity
  6. Updates the ticket and closes it
  7. Escalates only if automated fixes fail

The Agent essentially acts like a Level 1 or 2 support specialist.

It's important to note that this change is not about replacing people or removing oversight. The most effective agentic systems are designed with clear boundaries, governance, and human‑in‑the‑loop controls - principles that are essential in enterprise environments.

Why This Difference Matters

Many organizational bottlenecks don’t come from a lack of ideas, content, or insight.

They come from manual handoffs, disconnected tools, repetitive admin work, and delays between making a decision and taking action.

Agentic AI begins to address these challenges by embedding intelligence directly into workflows, rather than layering it on top.

That doesn’t make generative AI any less important. In fact, the two are most effective together:

  • Generative AI accelerates thinking and creation
  • Agentic AI accelerates execution and follow‑through

This evolution is one reason Sentia will be attending IBM's upcoming Think 2026 conference, where agentic AI is expected to be a key focus. The industry’s growing attention reflects a broader shift toward AI that integrates securely into enterprise environments and delivers measurable business impact.

This direction aligns closely with Sentia’s philosophy: AI should be practical, responsible, and outcome‑driven. Not isolated tools. Not one‑off experiments. But solutions that integrate with existing systems, respect governance requirements, and support how organizations actually operate.

As organizations move beyond asking “What can AI generate?” and toward “How can AI help us execute better?”, agentic AI will play an increasingly important role in the next phase of enterprise transformation.
